Age 65: What Next?
03/10/13 9:29 PM

I will be 65 y/o later this year and from "reading" my "benefits" end at age 65.
My question is, assuming that the claim is paid till 65th birthday, is there any notification from the insurance company or will payments just stop?

Thanks

Well, given that you are fully aware of your policy's provisions, does it really matter how much notice you're given?

You already know that the end is near.

If your disability started within the last 2 years your benefit maybe paid past 65. Some policies will pay for 24 or longer months if you have a disability close to the end of the benefit period. Call the carrier.

Big Al -

Such a simple question. Yet, the answer can be a little technical. I totally agree with the good advice already posted here by NursingAngel and Regan. Depending on your policy and the carrier, the end of your benefit period is likely an automated function. You might get a computer generated letter with your benefits check - and you might not. Anymore, there are so many types of policies handled by claim shops that it's almost impossible to remember all of the details of all of the policy blocks you're responsible to handle.

It's important that you understand what benefits are due to be paid when. But I'm a little skeptical about really accomplishing that in a phone call to the insurance company customer service. It might serve you to write a letter and either mail or fax it to the claims examiner so that she (or he) can explain it to you - in writing.

Take care.

"Payments stop after 65...."
DI Specialists hit the nail on the head and the answer will then go to whether it it is a group, OR an individual policy.
IF it is an INDIVIDUAL policy, then depending on the ONSET age of the disability, it CAN be paid PAST 65.
Hope this helps!

Thank you all for your comments & advise.
When I initially read the policies, I assumed I understood the maximal benefit period. Having read the forum comments, I will re-read the policies..
I went on claim at age 58 for a medical condition.

Thanks again.
